A useful claim must risk being wrong

A scientific claim should make predictions that evidence could, in principle, contradict.

The idea

If every possible outcome is treated as proof, the idea cannot be meaningfully tested. Strong explanations expose themselves to failure.

An example

“This treatment improves recovery within two weeks” can be measured; “it works invisibly even when nothing changes” cannot be tested in the same way.

Put it into practice

Ask: “What result would convince me this explanation is wrong?” If the answer is “nothing,” be cautious.
