Simple rules can create complex behaviour
Emergence occurs when interactions among simple parts produce a pattern that no single part controls.
The idea
The system-level behaviour comes from relationships and feedback. Understanding each component alone may not reveal the whole pattern.
An example
No individual bird designs a flock’s shifting shape. Each follows local rules about distance, alignment, and nearby movement.
Put it into practice
When a system seems centrally planned, look for simple local incentives that could generate the pattern from the bottom up.
Test yourself: Emergence describes…
Complex patterns arising from simple local interactions
Right. System-level order can appear without any single part directing it.
