Historical periods are useful boundaries
Periodisation divides the past into named eras for analysis.
The idea
The boundaries highlight some changes and hide others. A transition can happen at different times in different places.
An example
A political revolution may transform government immediately while farming habits change much more slowly.
Put it into practice
Ask what changed at the boundary and for whom.

Changes occurred at different times
Periods are analytical tools rather than universal simultaneous switches.
