Hotter air can change performance
Density altitude expresses air density as an equivalent altitude in a standard atmosphere.
The idea
Higher density altitude means less dense air. This can reduce aircraft performance; the effect depends on the aircraft and conditions.
An example
A hot day can make an airport perform like a higher-elevation location than its actual elevation suggests.
Put it into practice
Distinguish airport elevation from the density of the air.

Test yourself: What does higher density altitude mean?
Less dense air
Density altitude describes the air, not a change in the airport's ground elevation.
