Empty space is an active choice
Negative space is the area around and between subjects—and it shapes what you notice first.
The idea
Space creates hierarchy, balance, tension, or calm. A subject surrounded by room can feel precious; a crowded frame can feel urgent or claustrophobic.
An example
Luxury advertising often uses generous empty space so one object receives undivided attention and appears more valuable.
Put it into practice
When viewing an image, notice the shapes made by what is absent. Do they support or compete with the subject?
Test yourself: A designer leaves a large blank area around a small product. What is that space doing?
Directing attention and shaping the visual balance
Negative space can make the product the focal point. The empty area actively shapes the composition.
